Overview
Emergency situations in veterinary practice are some of the most challenging moments a team can face. Miscommunication or uncertainty in decision-making during these times can lead to errors, patient harm, and emotional strain for everyone involved.
This practical, evidence-based “train the trainer” style programme is designed to equip your team with the skills and confidence to perform effectively when it matters most by empowering you to deliver immersive simulation-based training within your own practice. You’ll learn how to run a realistic emergency scenario, lead structured debriefs, and use simulation as a tool to strengthen communication, decision making, and performance across your team.
Immersive simulation training is now a core element of undergraduate veterinary education. It allows teams to practise high-pressure situations in a safe, supportive learning environment without any risk to patient safety. This programme brings that same proven approach directly to your practice.
What's involved?
This course combines online learning (3 hours) with a full day in person workshop
Online Module: Developing Effective Debriefing Skills and Understanding Human Factors (2 x 45 minute recorded sessions, and 2 x 45 minute live discussions)
- The online component focuses on mastering the art of debriefing — the crucial stage of simulation where reflection and learning take place. You’ll learn how to lead open, constructive discussions that promote learning rather than blame.
- We’ll also explore the fundamentals of Human Factors — the science of how people interact with their work environment, equipment, and each other — and how this understanding can improve team performance, communication, and decision-making under pressure.
- These skills extend far beyond simulation: they can transform clinical case reviews, morbidity and mortality rounds, and everyday team meetings, leading to stronger communication, improved wellbeing, and better clinical outcomes.
In-Person Workshop (1 full day): Running Immersive Simulations in Practice
This highly interactive day will guide you through every step of delivering an emergency simulation exercise with your team — from scenario design and briefing through to running the exercise and facilitating a structured debrief. You’ll experience running an emergency medicine scenario first-hand and explore how simulation can be adapted to a range of clinical situations and team contexts.
By the end of the course, delegates will:
- Feel confident in organising and running simulation-based emergency clinical training within their practice
- Be skilled in facilitating effective debriefs that identify where skills were used effectively and where opportunities were missed
- Understand key Human Factors principles that influence performance under pressure
- Be equipped to embed a culture of openness, reflection, and continuous improvement within their practice
